Dr. Ablett, who made his debut as Luiz in the Gondoliers 1923, and who was to be a devoted servant of the Society as a playing member and secretary for many years, made the only speech of the evening. Referring to the rumour that the show was in aid of charity, he said this was incorrect but that in order to protect the Society’s Guarantors (those who had agreed to support the Society financially in case of an overdraft at the bank) “who had come forward in such a kind way it had been decided to raise a reserve fund. This had been successful and in future the Society would be able to perform for charity.”
